How to Maintain Your Synthetic Wicker

To the surprise of many, wicker is not a material, but a method of weaving. There are different materials that can be used to manufacture wicker patio furniture. For natural wicker, the most used materials are rattan, reed, willow and bamboo. For Resin Synthetic Wicker, the best material is Polyethylene, a resin of plastic.

Natural wicker furniture is very susceptible to humidity, which makes it better to be used for indoor spaces.

Even though Resin Synthetic Wicker is much more resistant to the elements than organic wicker, it doesn’t mean that it can be constantly exposed to the elements without repercussionsTo ensure years of durability of your wicker outdoor patio furniture, follow these tips:

  • Keep your furniture on a shaded area, when not in use. If you don’t have a covered patio, at the minimum we recommend UV protective covers. Constant exposure to UV Light can dehydrate the fibers, causing brittleness, and breakage.  Depending on the intensity of the sun, the furniture shouldn’t be directly exposed to UV light more than 2000-3000 hours.
  • If you are affected by freezing temperatures during the winter, store the furniture during the coldest months. Before you put the furniture away, make sure you clean it properly with a solution of mild soap and water, and a soft bristled brush for the hard to reach areas. Let the furniture dry completely before bringing it inside.
  • Refrain from using harsh chemicals to clean the wicker. This can cause permanent damage, not only in the color but to its structure.
  • Wipe spills as soon as they happened, with a dry cloth of soft texture. For stubborn stains, use a solution of mild soap and water and spot clean it.

Properly following these tips will help to keep your furniture in great condition for many years.
